Let’s first talk about Lewes which is located in East Sussex and then, we will explore the best parking spots there, both free and paid.
Lewes is a stunningly beautiful little town in East Sussex, situated on the River Ouse and surrounded by the lush South Downs countryside. It gets its name from an old Saxon word that means ‘sloping hills,’ and it has a long history, including the battle of Lewes in 1264. It is thought to have been founded in the sixth century during the dark ages.
It is also known for housing none other than Anne of Cleves, Queen of England and Henry VIII’s fourth wife. Her timber-framed 15th-century home is only a 10-minute walk from Lewes Castle and the Barbican Museum, and even closer to the ruins of Lewes Priory from the 9th century.
Lewes is only a 40-minute drive north-east of Brighton and is teeming with art and music veterans. It has a very friendly atmosphere and some cute little cafes and art shops. If you want to dress up, go to the internationally renowned Lewes Glyndebourne Opera House. If opera isn’t your thing and you’re looking for unique gifts, stop by the Lewes Flea Market. The Dorset, which is over 300 years old, is one of Lewes’s most charming old English pubs.
All of this sounds wonderful, but Lewes has a dark side: Lewes bonfire night. You have to see it to believe it. Fireworks are just the tip of the iceberg, with over 60,000 visitors and a parade. Every year, the police try and fail to deter a large number of people from attending. It’s a truly apocalyptic Guy Fawkes night, complete with burning effigies of despised politicians, genuinely terrifying people in costumes carrying burning crosses, boarded-up shops, and wild anarchistic behavior. We strongly advise against attempting to park in Lewes on that night!
Lewes has a population of 104,000 people and attracts approximately 3 million tourists each year. We have located some free overnight and residential parking spots for you, so keep reading to save time and money. Pay and display options in the city center are expensive, and parking on residential streets can save you more than £10 per day.
